Last week I had a conversation with State Rep. Paul Thissen (DFLMinneapolis) shortly after he announced his candidacy for governor. Rep. Thissen has been a friend to this blog, occasionally offering insightful comments on health care reform (his specialty area)…I will share my conversation in two parts: the first an objective review of the candidate’s message, the second my analysis of the candidate and his or her chances.

Across the state, Minnesotans are struggling to fill up the tank. Gas-guzzling cars are clogging our roads and polluting the environment.
Minnesotans deserve a 21st century transportation system. Public transit, bicycling, and walking must be major themes in this campaign. If we invest in public transit by expanding service, we can cut carbon emissions, reduce congestion, and help Minnesotans avoid sky high gas prices. Incorporation of exercise into Minnesotans’ daily routines via bicycling and walking will encourage healthier lifestyles. In order to do this, we must increase density and provide Minnesotans with safe, dedicated bicycle paths. Investment in bicycle infrastructure will also create jobs, which are disappearing at an alarming rate these days…

If you do not have a kid with special health care needs, you cannot imagine the challenges, hardship or joy involved. Our son was born premature, needed several surgeries and was dependent on oxygen for 18 months. The first three years of his life, our private insurance was great and paid over $1 million in claims.
Then our son was diagnosed with autism. Suddenly, our health insurance refused to cover the therapy he needed: Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). This therapy has over 30 years of studies proving its effectiveness and is recognized by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the U.S. Surgeon General as evidence-based treatment.
