Countdown to Precinct Caucuses

January 26, 2010| Posted in Uncategorized

At Thissen for Governor Headquarters, we’re counting down the days to the Precinct Caucuses. We’re only 7 days away from Paul’s first step in becoming the DFL-endorsed candidate for governor in 2010. To find your caucus location, click here.  And to learn why so many people across Minnesota are supporting Paul Thissen, take a moment to watch the first in our series of one-minute videos, filmed at the MSU-Mankato forum last week.

Let’s turn out in force on caucus night, February 2nd!

We have built an incredibly strong state-wide campaign.

First of all, it’s built on hard work and energy. We have gone out in 2009 to 83 of our 87 counties, most of them several times, met with thousands of Minnesotans. And you know what? The lesson I take from Massachusetts is you win elections by working hard and bringing a lot of energy to it. That’s what we’ve done, and that’s what we’re going to do.

Second is, it’s built on a simple message. And that is: our job is to rebuild Minnesota and its economy. And we have to do it in a way that works for middle-class families.

It’s built on the idea that what happens inside the Capitol, what happens over there, doesn’t matter as much as what happens in real people’s lives. And we’ve got to get away from the political gamesmanship, whether it’s within our own party, or whether it’s within our state government. And I’m committed to doing that.

And the last thing is we’ve got to understand that politics as usual won’t cut it anymore. We have built a campaign that is about bringing new ideas — rising to the task of meeting the challenges of this state.

Smart leadership. Smart new leadership. That’s what I have to offer you. And I’d really appreciate your support.

Ice Roots Politics!

If you’re really going to call yourself part of the Minnesota political scene, you’ve got to try doorknocking in below-freezing wintry weather! The whole Thissen family got the chance to show their winter gusto as we went door to door in Owatonna on behalf of Jason Engbrecht, a great DFL candidate seeking the senate seat in Tuesday’s special election. I felt so proud of the kids – they didn’t complain once and they made an adventure out of climbing giant snow piles and splashing through big slushy puddles. And every house we visited seemed to have someone home waiting for the Vikings game to start – so we an opportunity to meet many new people.

Paul Thissen Still Poised to Surprise

I recently got a call from Paul Thissen in the middle of the day. I’m not sure he expected to get a non-answering machine voice, but we had a very pleasant conversation. We discussed the caucuses, the Scott Brown fiasco, the convention, and even the upcoming legislative session. We spoke for nearly a half hour.

He indicated that he has been working the phones regularly and at times his voice sounded a little tired. This guy is a hard worker and seems purely authentic.

Children’s Health: Working on Solutions

ST. PAUL – State lawmakers heard alarming testimony yesterday at the State Capitol on the growing problem of childhood obesity in Minnesota, and proposed solutions to do something about it.

“Twenty-three percent of Minnesota children ages 10 -17 are struggling with the difficult health challenges of childhood obesity,” said State Rep. Kim Norton (DFL-Rochester), Childhood Obesity Working Group co-chair. “No child should begin life facing a lifetime of serious health problems. There are steps we can take to help our children live healthier, and reduce the number of obese children in Minnesota.”

“Preventing obesity is an essential part of reining-in escalating health care costs and one of the best places to begin is with our children,” said State Rep. Paul Thissen (DFL- Minneapolis), House Health Care Policy Committee Chair. “This joint hearing gave us an opportunity to learn how schools and local public health departments are collaborating to develop innovative models to keep our children healthy.”
